Trail head: Board the Capitol Corridor Express bound for Sacramento, Train #528 at 10:10 AM. (Roundtrip fare is $ 53 for seniors. Probably best to buy tickets beforehand to insure a seat.)
We’ll have dramatic views of the Bay and Carquinez Strait not seen from I-80. Arriving Sacramento at 11.57 AM we’ll walk to one of the restaurants along the Sacramento river in Old Town for lunch. Then we’ll walk among the shops along the river to the Railroad Museum for an extended visit. The average adult visitor spends 2-3 hours here. Museum hours are 10 AM to 5 PM and admission is $12. Then we’ll board the Capitol Corridor Express bound for Berkeley, train #547 at 5:03 PM. Our return has flexibility with west bound trains earlier at 3:55 PM, and later at 5:55 PM, and 7:55 PM. All of our walking travels are within a half mile of the Sacramento train station.
If you plan to join this trip it would be helpful if you sent the trip leader Dennis an email with your email address and mobile phone number. Then he will be able to maintain contact boarding trains and coordinating our activities at different stopping points. Contact Dennis at <email@example.com>.
Driving directions to the Berkeley train station:
From I-80 take University Ave exit and go east on University to 6th St. Turn left and go north one block to Hearst Ave. Turn west and go two blocks to 4th St and look out for Spenger’s Grotto, 1919 4th St. There’s a parking lot across the street from Spengers and the parking is $6 for all day. Park then follow the signs walking to the Amtrak station, about one block. There are also AC transit buses that stop at the station.
