Online Exercise Offerings with PD Active

PD Active, a Bay Area non-profit by and for people with Parkinson’s Disease, offers weekly, live-stream exercise classes with local teachers for the East Bay Parkinson’s community.

In addition to these classes, there are many excellent resources online that can help you maintain an active and varied exercise regimen and connect with PD communities locally and around the U.S.

ABC Program Classes

Pilates- ABC Program

Thursdays from 12:00 pm-12:50 pm
Description: Join movement trainer Lila Heller for a Pilates class. Take a mini deep dive into the connection of the mind and body. Learn tools to use daily and experience ease in your body. This class is designed to be fun, interactive and enlightening. Register at this link. After registering, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting. The Pilates class fee is a suggested donation of $10, paid through PayPal here. The meditation class afterwards is currently being provided for free! Mindfulness Meditation- ABC Program

Description: Lila Heller will lead a mindfulness meditation session which will serve as a fitting session after Pilates. This meditation class can also be taken without Pilates. If you have already registered for Pilates, you don’t need to register for this mindfulness meditation. You can use the same information as you did for the Pilates class. If you did not register for Pilates, register for Mindfulness Meditation at this link. Tai Chi for Parkinson’s- ABC Program

Fridays from 12:00 pm-12:45 pm
Description: This class taught by Otto Dittmer, is a mind-body, low-impact movement practice that has been shown to reduce balance impairments in people with Parkinson’s with additional benefits of improved functional capacity and reduced falls. Research shows that Tai Chi has a beneficial impact on the health of the heart, bones, nerves, muscles, immune system, and the mind. Description: Vigorous class based on the Parkinson’s Wellness Recovery program. Focus on elevating heart rate, big movements, strength. Have light dumbbells or cans or water bottles ready. Register in advance for this meeting: After registering, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting. Suggested fee $10 per class paid through PayPal to fibrichova@gmail.com or Venmo @Petra-Fibrichova at the end of the month when Petra sends you your statement. Check is also an option.

ABC Video Recordings
Video recordings of some of the ABC program’s classes, including tai chi, PWR and Pilates, are available on PD Active’s YouTube channel. If you watch a teacher’s video on YouTube, please consider making a $5 to $15 donation to the appropriate teacher on PayPal. Boxing

Albany RSB (Rock Steady Boxing) 

Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 10:00 am-11:30 am
Description: Rock Steady Boxing is the first program in the country dedicated to using boxing to condition for optimal agility, speed, muscular endurance, accuracy, hand-eye coordination, footwork, and overall strength to defend against the opponent — Parkinson’s. Coach Daniel Burkhardt teaches exercises varying in purpose and form that share one common trait: they are rigorous and intended to extend the capabilities of the participant.

Dance for PD®

Classes combine elements of modern dance, ballet, social dancing & improvisation to create an enjoyable, stimulating non-pressured artistic experience. Presented in association with the Mark Morris Dance Group. Open to all; no dance experience is necessary. Classes via Zoom.

PWR!Moves®

Tuesdays from 11 am-12 pm

Description: PWR!Moves is a progressive, neuroplasticity-based aerobic exercise developed to push back against the main PD symptoms such as small and slow movements, stooped posture, balance problems, gait changes. We start slow with mindful movement, then elevate our heart rate with 30 min of aerobic exercise working on big steps, coordination, balance. We continue with a few strengthening exercises on the mat and finish with stretching and relaxation. Be Heard! Discussion Group

Discussion Group Description: Classes are online right now for safety reasons – please email ktwarren@gmail.com to be added to the Zoom meeting! Groups begin with conversation warm-ups led by KT Warren and Ed Silberman, followed by each student telling personal stories on a common theme (for example, you might be asked to tell of a job you held, a place you traveled, or someone important to you). Speakers will be coached by KT for volume, speech clarity, and vocal color. You’ll practice real conversational skills, in community. Put your Be Heard! knowledge to work and build your community in conversation!

Be Heard! Voice for Parkinson’s

Voice for Parkinson’s Description: This class taught by KT Warren, is like a vocal yoga class. Using a blend of vocal and physical exercises based in theater work, qi gong, yoga and music, Be Heard! weaves a meditative flow to encourage participants to be fully present. Participants energize their voice and develop real-world tools that can be brought outside the classroom, benefiting everyday life and finding joy along the way with KT Warren ($10 payment via PayPal to ktwarren@gmail.com).

The Tremolos

Mindful Movement: You, Yoga and Parkinson’s

Description: Yoga is one of the most beneficial complementary therapies for Parkinson’s disease, helping to increase flexibility; improve posture; loosen tight muscles; build (or rebuild) confidence; and, through these benefits, enhance the quality of life. Pamela Perry and Aileen Kim will alternate teaching the class; they have both been long-term volunteers for PD Active’s Yoga for PD classes. This class is not just for people with Parkinson’s. Friends, family, caregivers, and anyone else are welcome! Suggested donation $10-$15. No one turned away for lack of funds.  This class is being offered via Zoom. Yoga Therapy for PD: Private and Semi-private Lessons
Suzanne Drolet (the instructor for Be Well: Yoga for People with PD) has been working with people with PD for over 10 years and her Mom had Parkinson’s, too. Sessions are $100/hour. $35 consultation fee is waived with a package of three sessions.
